Neighbours draws on Hannah Arendt, Judith Butler, Toni Morrison and Simone de Beauvoir in thinking about how people come to see one another as familiar, foreign, acceptable, threatening, perpetrator or victim. Rather than treating “the Other” as someone distant, the project asks what happens when difference, power and judgement exist between people who share the same building, street or everyday environment.

These questions are approached not through theory alone, but through neighbours: ordinary people whose lives reveal how systems of belonging and separation are produced, maintained, and challenged.
